Convention Details

A letter from SSA President Jimmy Adams includes more details about plans for the convention:

Dear SSA Members, Friends and Guests,

Are you ready to help us kick off a new century? We will be holding the 101st Annual Convention of the Southern Seed Association in historic Savannah, Georgia, on January 18-20, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency. The hotel is located right on the Savannah River so that you can watch the ships enter and exit the busy Port of Savannah. It is also located within walking distance of the historic district of the city with the many beautiful old homes and churches that have been preserved by the Savannah Historical Society and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), which has international campuses. Savannah’s “City Market” is easily accessible and has much to offer for shopping as well as food and entertainment.

Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Edward Oglethorpe as a British debtor’s colony. Trade and commerce soon changed things, however, as can be seen in the homes built from the wealth of industry, commerce, and agriculture. Savannah was the birthplace of notables such as Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of America) and the famous singer/song writer Johnny Mercer. Savannah was the backdrop for the book and movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” which is part fiction and part fact based around the true character of Jim Williams and the trial of a murder which took place in his home. You will be able to tour the “Mercer-Williams” home where the murder took place and where the movie was filmed. Be sure to take time for a trolley tour and if possible, the “Ghost and Graveyard” tour.

We will have our 4th Annual “Tailgate Party” Saturday evening on the Terrace of the Hyatt which overlooks both the Savannah River with the Talmadge Bridge as our backdrop. Be sure to bring your team jersey to show your true colors. Someone should be able to boast. If so, please be kind.

Sunday, we will have our morning Devotional Service in the “Plimsoll” room overlooking the river with a spectacular view. The golfers will be playing across the river on the Westin course, and they have promised beautiful weather (we’ll see). Sunday evening, we are planning to show you some “Southern Hospitality” in the historic part of town.

Monday, we will have our SSA business meeting, program, and speakers. Genie and Amy Taylor are working on an exciting program for our spouses, which I am sure they will enjoy. Monday evening, we will conclude with our “President’s Reception and Banquet,” which will be held in the ballroom right on the river. And as always, don’t forget the SSA Scholarship Drawdown with $5,000 going to some lucky winners and $5,000 going to the SSA Scholarship Fund to help deserving students.

Genie and I are looking forward to seeing you in Savannah. Please do not tarry making your reservations. We are hoping to have a crowd.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Adams, SSA President
