Beck’s and RAGT have entered a collaboration with Phytoform to develop next-generation corn trait products using artificial intelligence-driven gene editing technology aimed at improving yield and productivity.
The partnership brings together Beck’s, the largest family-owned retail seed company in the United States, RAGT, an international seed breeder, and Phytoform, a biotechnology company focused on AI-enabled crop improvement.
The companies said the initial focus will center on optimizing whole-plant corn architecture, a strategy designed to improve harvestable yield and overall crop performance in major agricultural markets, including the United States, South America and potentially Europe.
At the center of the collaboration is Phytoform’s CRE.AI.TIVE platform, which uses artificial intelligence to identify and optimize targeted edits in a plant’s native control DNA. The technology is designed to fine-tune gene expression by adjusting when, where and how strongly genes are expressed, rather than introducing foreign DNA.
That distinction could carry regulatory advantages in some regions, where crops developed through native gene editing may be regulated similarly to conventionally bred varieties.
The companies said the project combines Phytoform’s AI-driven crop development platform with Beck’s and RAGT’s breeding programs, proprietary germ plasm and commercial expertise.
Growers continue to face pressure to increase productivity while improving efficiency, making innovations in plant architecture an area of growing interest across seed development.

Corn remains one of the most widely grown and commercially significant crops globally, with breeding efforts increasingly focused on yield gains, resilience and input efficiency.

Phytoform said its technology offers an alternative to transgenic breeding approaches by working within the plant’s own genome to deliver targeted trait improvements.
