A new lab-based DNA test could streamline how seed companies verify genetic purity across vegetable crops.
Developed by Canadian firm Gene‑G, the test uses single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) fingerprinting to identify off-types and confirm hybrid identity in crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons. Unlike traditional grow-out tests, which can take weeks or months, the DNA analysis is completed within days.
The method evaluates dozens of genetic markers in a single test, producing a unique genetic profile for each seed lot. Early adopters say it could significantly reduce the risk of contamination in hybrid programs, where even low-level genetic variance can lead to costly losses in the field.
The technology is now being adopted by breeders aiming to tighten quality control without the delays of seasonal testing windows.
