The ASTA delegation in Brussels, Belgium.
Brussels, Belgium (November 26, 2024) - In early November, the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) organized a week-long visit to Brussels, Belgium, bringing together member company leaders to advocate for progress on the European Union’s legislative initiative concerning new genomic techniques (NGTs).
The delegation aimed to influence the ongoing development of the EU NGT file, which is currently awaiting a draft negotiating text from the European Council.
During the trip, the ASTA delegation engaged with key stakeholders, including European Commission policymakers, influential members of the European Parliament, and representatives from the current and incoming European Council Presidencies.
A highlight of the visit was a seminar hosted by the U.S. Mission to the EU. This event featured ASTA members Simplot Plant Sciences and Pairwise, showcasing how innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are leveraging NGTs to promote sustainable and competitive agriculture.
According to ASTA, the delegation’s efforts underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing agricultural challenges and advancing seed industry priorities on both sides of the Atlantic.
