American-Newlong, Inc. (NLA), a manufacturer of automated, open-mouth bag packaging, bag making, bag sewing, and bag closing systems and machinery, in May opened its new 10-acre, 24,000-sq.-ft. state-of-the-art flagship manufacturing facility in Mooresville, IN.

In April 2023, American-Newlong experienced severe weather damage to its original location on Harding Street in Indianapolis, a site it had occupied since 1978. This incident prompted management to accelerate their plans for expansion and relocation, which were already under consideration due to sales growth.

The company says the new facility will provide NLA and its customers with a more resilient infrastructure to support future growth objectives.

Grand Opening

NLA President Jerry Buchanan shared a glimpse of the company’s journey at a grand opening event May 24.

“We opened for business back in 1978 on the south side of Indianapolis with the manufacturing of paper bag-making machinery mainly serving the grocery bag market,” Buchanan says. “Several years later, the plastic grocery bag was introduced into that market, and the demand for paper grocery bags in the United States slowly dwindled away. With plastic bags taking over that market, American-Newlong changed our business direction and focused our attention on the manufacturing and service of automated bag filling and bag closing machinery, which we still do to this day. Although we serve many markets, you will mainly find our bag-filling machines in the feed, seed, and grain industry, working with farmers all over the country.”

Buchanan notes this transition from paper to plastic bags is a testament to the company’s adaptability and commitment to meeting market demands. Recently passed state laws and government initiatives have re-invigorated the paper bag making market. As of 2024, American-Newlong is putting more emphasis on growing this part of our business to further diversify their product offering.

Significant strides. Buchanan adds American-Newlong has made significant strides in the packaging industry, establishing itself as a pioneer in automation and efficiency. Newlong has consistently invested in research and development, resulting in cutting-edge technology that enhances production capabilities for its clients.

However, he says it’s the company’s unwavering commitment to customer-centered service and integrity that truly sets it apart. American-Newlong has built lasting partnerships with clients across various industries, ensuring that their unique packaging needs are met with tailored solutions and exceptional support. This dedication to excellence has not only enhanced customer satisfaction but Buchanan says also positioned the company as a trusted leader in the automated packaging market.
