Minnesota Seed Processor Expanding Small Lot Seed Services

Date Posted: August 27, 2008

Le Center, MN (August 27, 2008) -- A small town in southern Minnesota is doing big things in the seed business. Interstate Mills has been cleaning soybeans since 1968 and over the years the company has developed an expertise in cleaning plot seed. Customers include large seed companies in Fort Dodge, IA, and as far away as New York State.

“Our reputation for quality has given us the edge. We take maintaining varietal very seriously,” says Seed Plant Manager David Holicky. “We have a system that effectively allows us keep seed varieties separated and achieve “kernel clean” status between lots. Our system works because of the small containers we use in the process. Also, there is very low impact on seed this way.

In 2007, Holicky says Interstate Mills packaged over 350 different varieties of corn and 220 varieties of soybeans plus experimental varieties that range from 1 bag to 300 bags.

Interstate Mills also treated and repacked 17,000 50 lb units of soybeans and repacked 60,000 20 lb units of corn which were then shipped all across the United States.

Incoming seed is received units of corn in 80k bags and repacked into 20k units. “These seem like large numbers but it varies from as little as 5 units to 1,000 units,” Holicky says. “We specialize in small quantities and different size bags to fit the need of our customers. We are also ready to expand into new and different markets large or small.”
