GM Wheat Trial Approved in UK by DEFRA

Date Posted: September 27, 2011

(September 27, 2011) -- The United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DSFRA) has announced its approval for a new genetically-modified (GM) wheat trial to take place in 2012-13.

Submitted by Rothamsted Research, the application has been approved for a select group of growers to plant wheat that has been genetically modified to resist aphids - a pest that can spoil yields in the UK.

It was evaluated by the Advisory Committee of Releases to the Environment and the independent expert group was satisfied of the potential benefits research into this area could bring to UK farming.

However, strict guidelines are to be put in place to ensure no GM crops will enter the food and feed chain.
